Monitoring Plants

We invite anyone who has planted tubestock grown in our YAN nurseries to contribute to the Climate Ready Revegetation (CRR) by monitoring your planting each year for three years. The process is simple and only takes a short time, but the information it provides is incredibly valuable. Your observations help the CRR team and partners such as the Royal Botanic Gardens better understand how different species perform in our landscapes, allowing us to refine plant selections in our nurseries and improve future revegetation efforts. It’s also a rewarding way to see the progress of your planting and learn more about the difference you are making over time.

What is involved in monitoring

There are two parts to monitoring: photo monitoring and plant survival monitoring. We would love you to do both.

Photo monitoring involves setting up one or two photo monitoring points that capture a representative sample of your planting. You will be asked to take a photo from your photo point/s once per year and to send your photo/s to us.

Landholders who have set up photo monitoring points have commented how wonderful it is to be able to track the growth of their revegetation over time.

Plant survival monitoring involves counting the number of plants that are ‘alive’, ‘dead’, or ‘uncertain’ once per year. If you have a very large number of plants, or they are dispersed amongst previous plantings, then we will work with you to select a representative sample to monitor. We will provide you with a simple form to fill out with the results of your survival monitoring.

We will contact you once per year to remind you to undertake your monitoring and send us the results.

How to Get Started

By submitting a Landholder Care agreement, you will receive all the relevant information, as well as occasional friendly notifications and reminders about monitoring and plant care. You will also be joining a network of people who are similarly passionate about caring for our local landscapes.

Monitoring Your Plants - The Value of Photos

Photo monitoring is a simple and powerful way to track the progress of your revegetation over time. With most of us carrying a phone in our pocket, it’s an easy method anyone can use to record how plantings establish, grow and change from season to season. By taking photos from the same point at regular intervals, you can clearly see the impact of your work and the improvements happening in the landscape. Over time, these images become a valuable record of your efforts and can help demonstrate the success of your planting. Watch the video for practical tips on how to set up your own photo monitoring points and hear how other landholders have benefited from using this straightforward approach.
