DESCRIPTION:
12:30pm Tuesday 18th April
C
aring for Platypus and Rakali
Speaker: Geoff Willi
ams (Australian Platypus Conservancy)

Geoff will talk about
the biology and key conservation requirements of these two fascinating spec
ies\, and how work to improve environmental conditions in the upper Murrum
bidgee River and its tributaries can help create habitat for these aquatic
mammals to prosper. Geoff will also provide us with some tips about how to
spot these often elusive mammals in the wild\, as well as explaining how y
ou can be involved in keeping track of local rakali and platypus numbers.</

>Post-fire recovery of the Mountain Galaxias
Speaker: <str
ong>Isobel Booksmythe (ACT Government)

Mountain galaxias (Ga
laxias olidus) have been monitored in the Upper Naas River catchment pre an
d post the devastating Orroral Valley fires of 2020. Annual autumn monitori
ng with bait traps has found fewer fish classed as young-of year ( &lt\; 50
mm total length) post-wildfire\, compared to pre-wildfire and non-fire impa

Mountain galaxias in the upper Murrumbidgee\, and outline future research

over 400 ha of revegetation in 5 years across the ACT. The project prioriti
sed revegetating in areas of importance for woodland bird diversity or wher

r we will explore what the local response of woodland bird communities will
likely be as this revegetation matures by presenting results from two case
studies in Victoria where bird survey data has been used to examine bird c
ommunity responses to woodland revegetation over time. Dr Caroline Wilson f
rom BirdLife Australia will discuss the “Birds on Farms” project establishe
d in 1995 and re-initiated 20 years later. Dr Angie Haslem will discuss fin
