Soil, Sunshine & Smiles: Yass Landcare Celebrates Mother’s Day in the Nursery

Yass Landcare welcomed community members to a memorable Mother’s Day event at the Yass Landcare Nursery on Saturday 9 May 2026. Held on a gloriously sunny morning, the Community Potting Day brought locals of all ages together to create special gifts for Mum with native plants.

Families arrived with pots of all shapes and sizes - or selected one from Yass Landcare’s abundant supply - and dug into potting up their plant(s) of choice. With soil and guidance provided by Landcare volunteers, children and visitors carefully selected from a wonderful range of species. Pots quickly filled with what will soon become colourful paper daisies, hardy succulents, and lovely small shrubs.

The kids particularly enjoyed choosing their plant species - adding a personal touch for their Mother's Day gifts - while learning valuable gardening skills along the way.

“A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Community Potting Day and helped make the activity such a warm and welcoming success,” said Glenda, Yass Landcare member. “Community events like these are what make Yass such a special place!”

As a free community event, the day also gave locals the chance to collect native tubestock for larger planting projects. The tubestock, grown by the Yass landcare Nursery, are helping grow greener spaces across the region.

Outside the Mother’s Day Community Potting Day, Yass Landcare always welcomes new volunteers to join their regular weekend working bees. The next opportunity is coming up on Saturday 13 June from 9:30–11am at the nursery, located behind the Men’s Shed at 1428 Yass Valley Way. It’s a great chance to lend a hand in the nursery, enjoy friendly conversation over morning tea, and even take home some free plants!

Looking ahead, there are plenty of exciting events on the horizon with Yass Landcare. Be sure to keep an eye out for the upcoming Clay Day for kids on 6 June, as well as the 2026 Art Competition which launches in November.
